My Updated District Projections..

A few changes in my district projections.  Seneca answered some questions this week, no doubt they are a contender NOW…

Remember, just my best guess based on games that have been played and the schedule ahead.

Class 3

  1. Reeds Spring- Wolves need to run the table and that includes a Week 9 win.  Unless Aurora pulls a shocker Wolves will be either the 1 or the 3.
  2. Seneca- Big move for the Indians… they have a real chance to be 8-0 heading into Lamar.  They have to get by Aurora and Cassville first
  3. Cassville- Wildcats came roaring back last week.  That slip up to McDonald County is gonna hurt their seeding.
  4. Mount Vernon- Almost put Aurora here… the head to head matchup will determine 4-5.  They will play first round
  5. Aurora- The Monett win was big for them…  see Mt Vernon comments.
  6. Monett- defending champs lost a lot of talent from that offense
  7. Hollister- I have to drop the Tigers a spot after the loss to Buffalo
  8. East Newton- this is a fluid ranking.. but this spot can be written in ink

Class 5

This one is pretty much taking care of itself..

  1. Glendale- Offense if ramping back up and already have a win over Lebanon
  2. Lebanon- Bonus points will likely keep them ahead of Ozark
  3. Branson – The Pirates jump Ozark because of head to head
  4. Ozark- Tigers would automatically fall a spot if they finish right a head of Branson.  That seems likely because of Glandale and Lebanon bonus pts.
  5. Waynesville- The winless team nobody wants to draw
  6. Central- Bulldogs need help and dont see it on schedule.

Erickson, Lady Wolves Take Down Norwood…

The Reeds Spring Lady Wolves have been hitting on all cylinders this season.  They are hitting over .400 as a team and getting masterful pitching performances.  Going into last night they were 9-1, suffering only a one run loss at Bolivar.

Yesterday afternoon they traveled to Norwood to take on the Lady Pirates in a game I broadcast right here on perryphillipssports.com  While the Lady Pirates pitching kept the Reeds Spring bats relatively silent, they showed with Izzy Erickson in the circle they dont need much.

The sophomore pitcher was mowing them down.  Its hard to believe she could have been much better.  Fifteen of the Twenty-One outs came via strikeout.  She was only a lone walk, a single, and an error short of perfect.  But that has been pretty much par for the course for her this season. She lowered her ERA to 1.00 and went over the century mark in strikeouts recording her 103rd.

She has been incredible at the plate as well, hitting over .600 coming into the game and adding a 2-4 performance on the day.  She scored the first run of the game and drove in another.  Madison Cantrell had two hits as well moving her batting average up to .485.

The Lady Wolves are now 10-1 on the season and are going to be right back at it this afternoon.  The host Aurora with a first pitch scheduled for 5.

District Projections after week 4

Will go ahead and post projections ahead of actual standings. (MSHSAA has yet to update the standings to show this weeks losses for Monett and East Newton)

Some changes this week without a doubt.  These are my projections for what things will look like heading into the playoffs…The way I see things, with what has happened and what is scheduled ahead.  These will very sometimes greatly from the current standings…..

Class 3

  1. Reeds Spring- I told you that Seneca would have to be the Wolves friend and this week they were.  Wolves will have to run the table to make this happen and could finish anywhere from 1-4 at this point but for the time being I will move them to the top spot,
  2. Seneca- Indians got a huge win this week.  No doubt they are for real.  They could very well still get the top seed.  Lamar still awaits them, as does Cassville.  They are also at a bonus point (for playing up) disadvantage to Reeds Spring.
  3. Cassville- Was really surprised they fell to McDonald County.  They play an undefeated St James team this week.
  4. Mount Vernon – The MtNeers will not drop any further than this and could very well climb back up the list
  5. Monett- The Cubs losing to Lamar did nothing to drop them.  The only reason they fall a spot is because Seneca forced its way up.
  6. Hollister- Tigers stay here after losing their second in a row.  You knew Bolivar would eventually get well, Hollister just happened to be the victim.
  7. Aurora- The Dawgs start with such a tough schedule its kind of hard to size them up.  I do think they and Hollister do finish with the 6-7 seeds, its just which is which.
  8. East Newton- The way I see things right now, this one is about the only one I am totally confident about.

Class 5

  1. Glendale- The Falcons and Yellow Jackets get the advantage of playing two Class 6 teams.  Those bonus points could make it hard for Branson to pull ahead
  2. Lebanon- Bonus points help them as well and the fact they lost head to head to Glendale would move them here even if they finish ahead of Glendale.
  3. Branson- Pirates with a HUGE win at Ozark this week. That should really help them finish here.
  4. Ozark- Unless Ozark fan finish ahead of one of those top two they will drop to this spot… At this point that looks likely
  5. Waynesville- again they find ways to stay in games but are having trouble finishing..
  6. Central- Like the Class 3 District.. this is the easiest call.

Wolves Spot Wildcats 14, Then Put the Hammer Down

Reeds Spring took a little while to get things going last night, but once they did, they did it in a big way.

It took only three plays for Logan-Rogersville to get on the scoreboard.  Bronson Tavenner hooked up with Ryker Strong going down the right sideline for a 61 yard touchdown only 1:31 into the game.  After a Reeds Spring turnover the two would connect again for another score less than two minutes later.  However, that would be the end of the scoring for the visitors to Carl Langley Field.

Reeds Spring would pick things up from that point and score the last 53 points of the game in moving to 2-2 on the season and remain undefeated in COC-small play.

Kelly Newton would lead the way on the ground.  The senior fullback rode the dominating performance of his offensive line and his quick to the hole skills to once again eclipse the century mark.  He would score on runs of 40 and 43 yards.

Blake Gronvold would score twice on the ground and added to it by throwing for a couple more scores.  His connections with Logen Plumb was a matchup that the Wildcats had no answer for.  The senior receiver caught one of the two TDs from Gronvold.

Seth Stamps would catch the other touchdown toss.  However, he was not done there.  The Wolves safety made a great break on the ball and picked off Tavenner pass and went untouched the other way into the endzone.

Cole Watson would score the other Wolves touchdown.

Reeds Spring punted only once on the night, and that was late in the game, when they were just running clock.

As much as the offense rolled.  The defense was just as dominating.  After those first two drives the Wildcats had trouble doing much of anything.

Thats two wins in a row for Reeds Spring.  And gets the overall record back to .500.  The will host Springfield Central next week for Homecoming.

Branson continues to open some eyes as they traveled up to state-ranked Ozark and came way form their long time rival with a 17-14 victory.  They moved to 2-2 on the season.

For the second week in a row, a tri-lakes team made its way to Bolivar to challenge the Liberators but this one did not get the same result.  Bolivar blanked Hollister 42-0 to get their first win of the year and drop the Tiges to 2-2.

And finally since 2-2 seems to be the theme of the area, far be it from Forsyth to break that trend.  The Panthers, playing in their first Varsity home game took care of Diamond, 48-33 to pick up their second win.

District projections at this early stage…

Time to start looking at the district and making some projections…  Remember a few things… This is only the way I see things considering what has happened so far, and what is still on the schedule.  It has nothing to do with what I would like to see happen.  This is also just as far as district seeding.  Once we hit the playoffs it a whole new ballgame.

Last year, I was pretty accurate.  Not a whole lot of changes from my first projections to what actually happened.  Now, this year already looks to be a whole lot tougher… but none the less, here we go anyway.

Class 3

  1. Cassville- They are young, but they are physical and so far the best that I have seen.  The win over RS would allow them to jump should they finish one spot behind. Don’t see them losing the rest of the regular season.
  2. Mount Vernon- Three tough games to start the season and three wins.  Project they will drop only games to Cassville and Lamar.
  3. Reeds Spring- Really think the Wolves could end up in the two spot.  Perhaps its my loyalty that says the two spot so,  for now I will put them in the three. Because of bonus points I can see a way they finish first in the standings and are dropped to second because of head to head loss.  (Even if Cassville and Mount Vernon finish right behind them, they would only drop one spot, its the max the state allows)  I think they have a great shot to run the table from here, if they just take care of business, and week 9 will be a battle, but that would still likely be a 2-3 seed.  The most likely way for them to get the one spot, would be to run the table and have Seneca finish ahead of MTV and Cassville.
  4. Monett- Cubs might not have the fire power they had a year ago, but they are still dangerous
  5. Seneca- May be the hardest team to predict.  They were young last year and are now getting the rewards of getting that experience
  6. Hollister-  They have more wins coming and bonus points will help keep them ahead of Aurora
  7. Aurora- No doubt they are better than last year, and I could be way off on them, they have played tough so far this season.
  8. East Newton- This one I am pretty confident about

Class 5

  1. Ozark – Dupee leads the Tigers to the one seed.
  2. Lebanon – They will get the benefit of bonus points over Ozark, that being enough is the only way I see they could finish ahead of the Tigers.
  3. Glendale- Not sure they are the third best team but think when the calculations are done they will be here.
  4. Branson- Pirates already have a win and likely to get a couple more, at least.  That will get them a home game week 10
  5. Waynesville- Tigers have started fast in their games thus far but so far have not been able to finish.  Looks like a rematch in round one, at this point.
  6. Central- No doubt in my mind that the Bulldogs belong in this spot.

Lady Wolves Continue to Roll…

The Reeds Spring Softball team could not have asked to get off to much of a better start.  Going into yesterday’s matchup with Carl Junction, they were 5-0, including three blowout victories, and two wins against COC-Large schools.

Yesterday, they provided more of the same.  Jumping out early on the Lady Bulldogs and bringing home a 6-4 win against another COC-Large school.

The Lady Wolves plated two runs in the top of the first inning on an error by CJ first baseman, Kaylie Hulette.  Brooke Davis would double to lead off the second and would score the Lady Wolves third run of the night on a RBI single from Keeley Bauer.  Bauer and Davis would each reach base three of their four times at bat on the afternoon.

Davis would double and score again in the fourth inning.  Reeds Spring would lead 4-2 going into the seventh inning.  They would add two big insurance runs, and they would need them.  The Lady Bulldogs made it interesting scoring two and bringing the tying run to the plate but in the end, they could do no more.

Izzy Erickson picked up the win, going six innings.  She allowed only three hits and two runs, one of which was earned.  She walked five and struck out ELEVEN!!!  Mackenzie Duvall pitched the seventh.

The Lady Wolves are now 6-0 on the season.  They are right back in action tonight against East Newton before opening up conference play at Bolivar on Thursday.  I know its early but Coach Scott Walker’s ladies are showing signs of what could be a special year.
